Gran Canaria Island - June '24
7/10/2024

The third and final phase of our Spain 2024 trip was a 70 km, 4-day walk across, up and over Gran Canaria Island from the beach resort towns of Masapoloma north to Galdar, (once the leading banana exporter to Spain). After leaving flocks of European beach-seeking weekenders, we quickly found ourselves in a moonscape, a dramatic change from the beach only a few miles away. The terrain ascended through a grey and red landscape resembling the US Southwest and rose sharply, passing yucca and pine. A few small white villages dotted the hillsides and the contrast between vast sky, deep blue ocean, tall pine and fir tree, and red rocks was exhilarating. We were largely alone with no other Peregrino's and few services. Our simple accommodations over the 4 nights were varied and provided everything we needed at the end of the day. The views got better each day as we rose further up. Other Canary Islands across the ocean, like Tenerife and Fuerteventura, beckoned for perhaps a future visit!
